Transforming Grief Into Songs
with Jessica Kion (Justice Cow)
After my dad died, I wrote an album exploring the beautiful and brutal facets of our relationship- I want to share my process from raw emotion to finished song to help other people sit with and express their grief and loss in creative ways.
For months after my dad died, I had memories streaming into my thoughts and I wanted to hold onto them. So I wrote an album called “My Dad Died” about the beautiful loving parts of our relationship and the brutal, dysfunctional parts as well. It was intensely cathartic to put everything on the table and I found a palpable sense of peace after finishing the album. I want to share how I captured these memories and show others some alternative paths forward transforming loss and grief into creativity.
Jessica Kion aka Justice Cow is the former bass player of Bent Knee. She graduated from Berklee College of Music with a Songwriting degree in 2013. She's written 5 solo albums and has led a songwriting group for the past 3 years. She's a musician, YouTuber, animator, visual artist, and is VERY passionate about songwriting!
